~ Robert F. Kennedy Sr. ~
This is Armageddon; it's the final battle. It's a battle that pits the forces of ignorance and greed against our children and the vast majority of human beings who want dignified, enriching, sustainable communities. Riverkeepers are the front line soldiers in the battle to secure our children's futures. We elbow our way into the courtrooms and into those back hallways of capital hill, where the big shots are divvying up the public trust, and we say: 'We demand an accounting. We want to know what you are doing with the things that don't belong to you- with the things that belong to our children.
~ Robert F. Kennedy Jr. ~
Oh, my countrymen! What will our children say, when they read the history of these times? Should they find we tamely gave away without one noble struggle, the most invaluable of earthly blessings? As they drag the galling chain, will they not execrate us? If we have any respect for things sacred; any regard to the dearest treasures on earth; if we have one tender sentiment for posterity; if we would not be despised by the whole world - let us in the most open, solemn manner, and with determined fortitude, swear we will die, if we cannot live free men!
~Josiah Quincy, Jr., 1788 published in the Boston Gazette~
We have guided missiles and misguided men.
~ Martin Luther King, Jr ~
To fight and conquer in all our battles is not supreme excellence; supreme excellence consists in breaking the enemy's resistance without fighting.
~ Sun Tzu ~
Only the dead have seen the end of war
~ Plato ~
Politics is what we create out of what we do, what we hope for, what we dare to imagine.
~ Sen. Paul Wellstone 1944-2002 ~
We are discreet sheep; we wait to see how the drove is going, and then we go with the drove.
~ Mark Twain ~
The greatest purveyor of violence in the world today [is] my own government. ... For the sake of the hundreds of thousands trembling under our violence, I cannot be silent.
~ Martin Luther King 1967 ~
They that can give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty or safety.
A patriot must always be ready to defend his country against his government.
~Edward Abbey (1927-1989) US author~
In the future days, which we seek to make secure, we look forward to a world founded upon four essential human freedoms The first is freedom of speech and expression--everywhere in the world. The second is freedom of every person to worship God in his own way--everywhere in the world. The third is freedom from want--which, translated into world terms, means economic understandings which will secure to every nation a healthy peacetime life for its inhabitants--everywhere in the world. The fourth is freedom from fear--which, translated into world terms, means a world-wide reduction of armaments to such a point and in such a thorough fashion that no nation will be in a position to commit an act of physical aggression against any neighbor--anywhere in the world.
~Franklin D. Roosevelt~
Your true passion should feel like breathing; it's that natural.
The things that will destroy us are: politics without principle; pleasure without conscience; wealth without work; knowledge without character; business without morality; science without humanity; and worship without sacrifice.
Never trust a government that doesnt trust its own citizens with guns.
If we fail to nourish our souls, they wither, and without soul, life ceases to have meaning. The creative process shrivels in the absence of continual dialogue with the soul. And creativity is what makes life worth living.
Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed.
~Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 'Letter from Birmingham Jail' Why We Can't Wait 1963.~
One day we must come to see that peace is not merely a distant goal we seek, but that it is a means by which we arrive at that goal. We must pursue peaceful ends through peaceful means.
~Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.~
America was established not to create wealth but to realize a vision, to realize an ideal – to discover and maintain liberty among men.
You cannot qualify war in harsher terms than I will. War is cruelty, and you cannot refine it. I am tired and sick of war. Its glory is all moonshine. It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for more blood, more vengence, more desolation. War is hell.
~General William Tecumseh Sherman~
Be fearless and pure; never waver in your determination or your dedication to the spiritual life. Give freely. Be self-controlled, sincere, truthful, loving, and full of the desire to serve. Realize the truth of the scriptures; learn to be detached and to take joy in renunciation. Do not get angry or harm any living creature, but be compassionate and gentle; show good will to all. Cultivate vigor, patience, will, purity; avoid malice and pride. Then, Arjuna, you will achieve your divine destiny.
~Lord Krishna from Bhagavad Gita 16:1-3~
Life isn't a matter of milestones, but moments.
Going to Church does not make you a good person
I am sick and tired of old men dreaming up wars for young men to die in. I think it is sad, the country you and I have all believed all our lives was the greatest country on earth, is now regarded as a bully, is regarded as arrogant, is regarded as careless about war.
To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.
No single nation should be allowed to police the world.
We must make clear to the Germans that the wrong for which their fallen leaders are on trial is not that they lost the war, but that they started it. And we must not allow ourselves to be drawn into a trial of the causes of the war for our position is that no grievances or policies will justify resort to aggressive war. It is utterly renounced and condemned as an instrument of policy.
The President, Vice President and all civil Officers of the United States, shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors.
President George W. Bush, Vice President Richard B. Cheney, Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld, and Attorney General John David Ashcroft have committed violations and subversions of the Constitution of the United States of America in an attempt to carry out with impunity crimes against peace and humanity and war crimes and deprivations of the civil rights of the people of the United States and other nations, by assuming powers of an imperial executive unaccountable to law and usurping powers of the Congress, the Judiciary and those reserved to the people of the United States.
Powell's information would help weapons inspectors complete their task and should be handed over to them immediately.
It came from other sources.
The price of being the world's only superpower is that its motives are sometimes questioned by others. Great strength is not always perceived by others as benign. Not everyone around the world is prepared to take the word of the United States on faith."
This night for the first time Polish regular soldiers fired on our own territory. The Polish state has refused the peaceful settlement of relations which I desired, and has appealed to arms.
War with Iraq should only be considered as a last resort.
Every nation, in every region, now has a decision to make. Either you are with us, or you are with the terrorists.
The U.S. led war against Iraq is the most serious crisis since the end of the Cold War and is in danger of rocking global stability and the foundations of international law.
Let us take care that our interventions do not give rise to new frustrations, do not produce new imbalances and spark fires which we cannot put out.
We don't do body counts.
