Western Jets Attack Radar in Iraqi 'No-Fly' Zone

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Aircraft taking part in U.S.-British patrols over Iraqi "no-fly" zones attacked an Iraqi air defense radar on Monday, in the seventh strike in 10 days, the U.S. military said.

The U.S. Central Command, which has responsibility for the Gulf region, said the jets launched guided weapons against a mobile early-warning radar near Ar Rutbah, about 250 miles southwest of Baghdad. The strike occurred at about 4:10 p.m. EST, the military said.

"The coalition executed today's strike after Iraqi forces moved the mobile radar into the southern no-fly zone where it was a threat to coalition aircraft," Central Command said in a news release.

U.S. and British jets have been increasingly attacking air defense missiles, radar and communications in Iraq's northern and southern no-fly zones over the past several months.

Both the United States and Britain have massed forces in the Gulf region for a possible invasion of Iraq.
