I have to disagree with the article written by Stan Goof, I mean Goff. First off, he is not nor ever was a "Special Forces" soldier. He was merely in an airborne unit in Vietnam. Hence, he was merely a ground pounder trained to fight conventionally while engaging and losing a guerilla war. He in no doubt harbors ill will towards anyone with any authority over him. Not to detract from his service, he never served in an all volunteer military such as what exists today. People enlist or get commissioned to do exactly what this Goff character whines about. I would rather die sweaty, covered in dirt and grime, and in the prime of my youth with the best friends I'll ever have while serving a cause greater than myself rather than grow old and shitting on myself or getting killed in what's really America's quagmire, automobile accidents.

I'm reminded of the scene in All Quiet on the Western Front where the soldier on leave flips out after hearing a speech (given to little boys) about how great it is to fight and die for the country. I'm reminded of Ducle et Decorum est. There can be nobility in fighting & dying, or it can be a terrible, pitiful waste. It sure as shit shouldn't be Glamorized though, the way it is being now-- esp since the decision makers are fucking things up so badly. T

My first visit to your site. We are clearly on the same page about the Bush Administration. I've been an anti-war (ANY war) pro-non-violent resistance person since the 'sixties. The people who run our country are not getting any wiser or any more ethical/moral.

Wow, I was wondering when the overpowering stench of that slimeball Pat Robertson would be showing up again, plus I really didn't know what diabolical scheme was behind Bush's sudden interest in Liberia. Making and supporting deals with a dictator who supports the evil forces in Sierra Leone that, as acts of terror, cut the arms and legs off of children and innocent villagers? And all for the purpose of taking over natural resources (such as gold). Of all the people on the earth, these RUF forces are the lowest of the low. Thank you so much for this article that points the way toward understanding what is really going on in THAT region.
